Why Networking is Essential and not that Difficult Even for Nerds

Monday, January 14, 2013, 5:30-8:30 pm

Rita Lim
Founder, PGC200

Rita Lim Networking has become a mantra for life science professionals. You are told to network yet what does it really mean? Having another stack of business cards simply gives you more work to do and cards to recycle after piling up on your desk. In this presentation, Rita will help you develop a strategy for directing your networking efforts and making the most of your time and money at networking events. She will present insights for why meeting people in and outside your areas of expertise can provide a perspective on your contribution to your industry. Rita will present a method for choosing the best networking events and how to use social media tools to enhance networking in person.

Rita was an introvert nerd until she learnt how to network. During her 10 nerd years in pharmaceutical drug discovery research, she initiated projects on falcipain (malaria) and hepatitis C NS3-4a protease; the HCV work resulted in a partnership with Schering-Plough and the development of bocepravir, a firstin- class cure in combination therapy for hepatitis C. Most recently, Rita has worked in the business of science, from marketing to sales. Rita serves as VP Corporate Development for CryoMedix, a medical device company that develops ultra cool cryoablation technologies for hypertension, cosmetic applications, breast cancer, and other medical indications.

Rita has been successful in obtaining an SBIR grant, co-authored 21 papers, two book chapters, and is a co-inventor on 11 patents . Rita is co-editor of the book series Pharmaceutical Outsourcing: Discovery and Preclinical Services.

Rita founded PGC200 and volunteers with Wormfree World Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to curing the world of soil-transmitted worm infections and is on the Industry Advisory Board for the Southern California Biotech Center.
